Start Date: 1991
Project Length: 2 Years
Objectives:

To incorporate full fat oilseed as a source of alpha-linolenic acid in the diets of both broilers and growing piglets. To elevate the amounts of total omega-3 fatty acids in the muscle and adipose tissues. To evaluate the nutritional and economical significance of such changes, thereby exploring the far-reaching nutritional implication of the fatty acid-modified animal products which modulates the tissue/plasma cholesterol and fatty acid composition. To demonstrate that foods of animal origin can be engineered by direct or indirect incorporation of omega-3 fatty acids to reduce the potential risk of coronary heart diseases.
