WGRF Commits $3.32 Million to 22 New Research Projects

Through a continuing co-funding partnership with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture – Agriculture Development Fund (ADF), the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, and other producer commodity groups, WGRF is pleased to announce $3.32 million of new funding for 22 crop related projects.

“At WGRF, our focus is on funding research that makes the western Canadian grain industry stronger,” says WGRF Board Chair Laura Reiter. “Working with the ADF partnership is a great way for us to efficiently work with groups who share the same goals as us.”

The new suite of research is focused on goals including breeding new grain crops with enhanced resiliency in a changing environment and improved resistance to some of the most significant challenges facing producers today, including diseases, insects and weeds.

The research goals are also in line with WGRF’s overall priorities, says WGRF Executive Director Wayne Thompson.

“This newly funded research is strategically aligned with our goals,” he says. “These include variety development and improved production practices, as well as addressing current and emerging challenges and priorities.”

A full listing of projects will be posted on the WGRF website once research contracts are in place.

The ADF is supported through Sustainable CAP, a five-year, $3.5-billion investment by Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial governments that supports Canada’s agri-food and agri-product sectors. This includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and a $2.5 billion commitment that is cost-shared 60 per cent federally and 40 per cent provincially/territorially for programs that are designed and delivered by provinces and territories.
